Social Media Tips for Artists

Have you ever wondered how you can optimize your social media platforms to share your art work with the world? With social media platforms such as Instagram, being visual platforms, many artists already utilize Instagram to share their work.

Social Media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram allow artists to connect with other artists, share their work and process while developing a following of people who appreciate and support their artwork. Because social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, are all free to use, this makes them great platforms to showcase an artist’s skills without compromising on quality. With marketing being the first benefit that comes to mind when thinking of using social media for your art, it is also extremely important to use your platforms to develop an audience. By utilizing social media, an artist can build a following which helps boost their social media visibility. While many artists’ main focus is marketing and selling their art, you have to remember that building relationships with your followers also helps increase your reach. By interacting with your followers and other fellow artists, it helps enhance your brand, create a community, and form lasting relationships.

It’s also important to post content consistently and during optimal times. Each social media platform has different days of the week and times that are considered “optimal” which is definitely something to keep in mind. You can have amazing content you are sharing but if you aren’t consistent with posting and aren’t taking advantage of optimal times to be posting on each platform, you aren’t optimizing your social media platforms for your art brand. Although there are MANY benefits to using social media as an artist, there are also some downsides that you need to keep in mind.

By having an online presence, this can take time away from your actual craft. By investing too much time into your social media platforms, you aren’t spending that time on your actual art. Which is why we are here in the first place! To avoid this, please remember to give yourself some structure to ensure you aren’t pouring too much time into social media content, rather than actually creating! Comparison to other creatives on social media can also add unwanted pressure on an artist when building their social media platforms. By setting a schedule and boundaries in place for yourself, such as monitoring your social media time spent and keeping it professional when engaging on social media, you will combat some of these pressures. By tracking your time spent scrolling through social media and preparing content and setting timers while working, you are protecting your time and wellbeing.

Lastly! I want to encourage all of my fellow artists to be mindful, open and authentic when sharing your experience on social media. Each of our journeys are unique and deserve to be shared and celebrated. Your unique perspective and experience is what makes you, YOU!

Don’t be shy, share it with the world.
